There’s something about Hartbeespoort that makes it the go-to weekend spot for people in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Set below the Magaliesberg mountains, about 45 minutes from either city, the town mixes water sports, wildlife, art, and food into one small area. Below are seven spots that make it worth the drive.
Hartbeespoort Dam
The dam is why the town exists, and it’s still the best reason to visit. Boat cruises leave from a few points around the shoreline, and jet skis and paddle boats are easy to rent for an hour or an afternoon. If you’d rather stay dry, plenty of restaurants sit right on the water, so you can watch the sun drop behind the mountains with a plate of food in front of you.
Harties Cableway
A short ride up the Magaliesberg range puts the whole valley below you. The trip takes only a few minutes, but the view from the top stretches across the dam and the surrounding hills. Once up there, a short walking trail and a café give you a reason to stay a while before heading back down.
Chameleon Village
This craft market is where locals send visitors who want a souvenir that isn’t mass-produced. Dozens of small stalls sell art, jewelry, and curios made by the people selling them, and a chocolate factory on-site is worth a stop on its own. A few restaurants are scattered through the market too, so lunch and shopping happen in the same visit.
Elephant Sanctuary Hartbeespoort
Few places let you get this close to an elephant. Guides lead small groups on walks with the animals, sharing each one’s background and personality along the way, and there’s usually a chance to feed them too. Tours run several times a day, but they fill up quickly, so book ahead rather than showing up and hoping for a spot.
Hartbeespoort Dam Snake and Animal Park
A smaller stop, but a reliable one, especially if kids are along for the trip. The park is home to snakes, big cats, and a mix of other animals, with feeding shows spaced throughout the day that give a closer look at how the animals are cared for. It’s an easy add-on to a day that already includes the dam or the cableway.
French Toast Coffee Café
A favorite breakfast and brunch spot among locals, tucked into a garden setting with big shaded tables. Portions run generous, the coffee is good, and it’s an easy stop before a morning on the dam or a climb up the cableway.
Upside Down House
Exactly what it sounds like. The whole house, including the furniture, is built upside down, and you walk through it as if gravity flipped overnight. It’s a short visit, but it makes for some of the best photos in town, and kids tend to love it.
