I asked Cape Town visitors where they’d go back just to eat -these 7 spots kept coming up

I reached out to dozens of Cape Town visitors to ask them one simple question: if you could return to the Mother City for just one meal, where would you go? The answers were surprisingly consistent. Seven restaurants kept appearing in response after response, each for different reasons, but all with the same underlying message: this place was worth the flight back.

1. Snoekies Hout Bay

Snoekies Hout Bay sits right at Hout Bay Harbour where the fishing boats come in. They serve crispy battered fish and chips with generous portions of hake, calamari, and prawns. The best part is eating your meal while watching the boats and mountains, with the salty sea air all around you. There’s even a big play area upstairs for kids, making it perfect for families.

2. Belly of the Beast

This small restaurant in East City does something different. There’s no menu to choose from because the kitchen makes whatever is fresh that day. You simply trust them to feed you well, and visitors say they always do. The kitchen is completely open so you can watch your food being made, and the desserts are all homemade and amazing.

3. Black Sheep on Kloof Street

Black Sheep has a blackboard menu that changes all the time based on what’s available. They buy whole animals and fresh fish straight from local fishermen, so everything is as fresh as it gets. The restaurant has three floors with different areas, from a lively bar downstairs to a cozy fireplace spot and a big space upstairs for groups. When the fresh fish runs out for the day, they just wipe it off the board rather than serving frozen fish.

4. COY

COY is a beautiful restaurant at the V&A Waterfront right next to where the yachts dock. The food focuses on African flavors and fresh seafood from the coast. Big windows give you views of Table Mountain and the harbor, and the inside has a fireplace and interesting art on the walls. Visitors love how the kitchen uses ingredients you don’t usually find at other restaurants in creative ways.

5. Kloof Street House

This restaurant is inside an old Victorian house with different rooms that all feel special. You can sit in the library on big leather sofas, eat in the garden under fairy lights, or choose any of the other cozy spaces. On Sunday afternoons, live jazz music plays while people have brunch. It works for any occasion, whether you want a quick coffee, some tapas, or a full dinner.

6. Den Anker

Den Anker has been at the V&A Waterfront for over 30 years serving Belgian food. They’re famous for their mussels served in big pots with fries on the side. The restaurant has huge windows that look out at Table Mountain, and you can sit outside and watch the boats go by. They also have Belgian beers on tap that you can’t find many other places.

7. Harbour House

Harbour House has two locations, one at the V&A Waterfront and one in Kalk Bay. Both spots have amazing ocean views through glass walls. The menu is all about fresh seafood, from sushi to whatever fish was caught that day. Even though seafood is the main thing, they have other options too so everyone can find something they like. People always mention the prawns and the lemon tart as dishes they still think about.
