Symphonic Bliss: Cape Town Philharmonic at Kirstenbosch

A magical evening of orchestral mastery awaits as the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) graces the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts stage on Sunday, 2 February 2025. Widely celebrated as South Africa’s premier orchestra, the CPO promises a journey through soundscapes rich in emotion and storytelling, offering a concert experience that is as inspiring as it is timeless.

Guided by conductor Brandon Phillips, the evening’s programme — aptly named Symphonic Storytelling — will take concertgoers through a spellbinding repertoire. Highlights include the effervescent Blue Danube Waltz by Strauss II, the exotic allure of Saint-Saëns’ Bacchanale, and the dramatic intensity of Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco. Other beloved compositions include Tchaikovsky’s Italian Caprice and Brahms’ Hungarian Waltz No. 5, guaranteeing something for every classical music enthusiast. The narration by John Woodland will add depth to the already mesmerising performance.

Louis Heyneman, CEO of the CPO, shared his thoughts on the upcoming event: “The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra thrives on bringing people together through music and performing at Kirstenbosch is an honour. The opportunity to present an engaging, accessible program in one of South Africa’s most iconic venues perfectly reflects our commitment to inclusivity and cultural enrichment. We look forward to a night filled with wonder and connection.”

The CPO’s extraordinary history, dating back to its founding in 1914, is a testament to its artistry and enduring legacy. Beyond their world-class concerts, the orchestra is deeply committed to fostering South Africa’s musical future through the country’s most extensive youth education program.

Sarah Struys, Events and Tourism Manager at Kirstenbosch, expressed her enthusiasm: “Kirstenbosch is excited to welcome the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening that promises pure magic. This concert highlights the incredible richness of orchestral music and its ability to connect people through shared emotion. As the garden echoes with symphonies that span continents and eras, we are reminded of the role music plays in weaving stories that touch us all.”
